Which is good, because that would go against what our hero is trying to accomplish. This time around, even I was able to find my way to success without blowing up half a city block. While the first game also emphasized stealth, it almost inevitably boiled down to a firefight. For those with more patience, the game offers a variety of ways to reward you, allowing you in most scenarios to accomplish your goals with firing a single shot. For terrible stealth gamers such as myself, you can go in guns at the ready, your handy drones at your side to cause chaos and destruction. Rarely is there only one strict way to deal with a problem. The game excels in allowing you generally unfettered access to the game’s world, and missions of all stripes take advantage of that freedom. Taking what it learned from the first game, the sequel improves on its most interesting components: hacking and interaction with the environment. With that being said, “Watch Dogs 2” has a lot going for it. To be more direct, I had more fun exploring the game’s Bay Area map, finding and completing numerous side missions and teaming up in online multiplayer modes than I did working my way through the main missions and its cyberpunk sensibilities.Īs with Ubisoft’s first installment, I simply never learned to care about what happens to the protagonist and his allies as they try to right the wrongs of this Orwellian-like world. “Watch Dogs 2” has me at a bit of a crossroads: While I truly appreciate the game’s distinct style and its attention to hacker culture, I find myself even less interested in the story and its characters than I was during the first “Watch Dogs,” whose focus on revenge and justice failed to impress.
